CALHHS OYCR

About

After California shut down its youth prisons in 2023, the newly formed Office of Youth & Community Restoration (OYCR) was tasked with providing trauma-responsive and culturally informed care for youth involved in the juvenile justice system. As a part of California’s Health & Human Services Department, OYCR’s mission is to oversee the transition of these youth back to their communities and connect impacted youth with resources to prevent recidivism.

My role on the digital team was launching OYCR on Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, and X, and leading content creation for weekly posts. I also assisted with website copy writing and general site maintenance.

AFTER

As mentioned, during the initial phase of OYCR’s site launch, finding site imagery was a challenge. Stock photo sites lacked authentic images of Black and Brown youth, making it difficult to represent OYCR’s communities accurately. After collaboration with community-based organizations (CBOs) partnered with OYCR, we received permission to use their images. This partnership allowed us to align the site’s visuals with OYCR’s mission while avoiding legal and ethical concerns.

A key challenge was finding imagery that aligned with OYCR’s mission of supporting black and brown youth. The OYCR team wanted photos representing the youth they served, but legal and ethical concerns limited us to stock images. For social, I proposed collaborating with OYCR’s partners to showcase their work, which helped build a following organically. As a direct result of collaboration, I asked our partners for permission on behalf of OYCR to use their imagery which resulted in more representative photos at OYCR’s disposal for both socials and the website (shown below).
